Event Noise Management

If you organise a big live music event or concert or outdoor movies, you have to apply to the local council for an event licence. This licence is issued with the conditions of event approval which includes noise limits.

Event noise must be managed to comply with the noise limits given in the conditions of event approval. Breach of the noise limits will result in fine or cancellation of the event or disqualification of your future event applications.

To ensure your event sound performance great and at the same time comply with the noise limits, event noise must be managed in a professional manner in consultation with acoustic engineers. Event noise management plan (ENMP) should be prepared to predict, monitor, minimise or control noise impacts on the surrounding areas and to demonstrate how the noise complies with the noise limits of approval.

At a minimum an ENMP should contain:

  • Description of event activities and sound equipment operated.
  • Predicted noise contours.
  • Event noise monitoring procedure.
  • Details of noise control measures to be implemented.
  • Complaint recording and response procedures.
